Abstract

The literature on work-life balance policies has grown significantly in recent years. However, few research studies have explored its implementation in small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly, in highly dynamic sectors of the economy, where talent retention is a key source of competitive advantage. Through a qualitative multiple case study approach, this paper examines the work-life balance policies put in place in four small and medium-sized software companies in Argentina. Our findings report the existence of two modes for implementation: standardized benefits broadly available to all and individualized benefits negotiated by each employee. Furthermore, a number of organizational factors and individual characteristics are identified that determine employee access to benefits.
